Johnny Cash, who was born February 26, 1932, died a decade ago, a matter of months after the loss of his beloved wife, June Carter Cash.
During his 71 years, the Man in Black won membership in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and The Gospel Music Hall of Fame. As those credentials suggest, his music spanned the entire spectrum. Most recently, “Girl from the North Country,” his duet with Bob Dylan, was featured on the soundtrack of Silver Linings Playbook.
There’s no way I could objectively pick a “definitive” Johnny Cash song – instead, I’ll post his version of a song that has been one of my favorites since the days when my parents played it when I was a kid.

In summers when I was a kid, we often made weekend trips from Minneapolis to Chicago to visit relatives. Coming home on Sunday evenings we would listen to stories and music on the radio. One of our favorite songs was Ghostriders in the Sky, but the Vaughn Monroe version. It is such a haunting song. Thanks for posting this. I’d forgotten Johnny Cash had recorded it.

We live near a somewhat popular music venue called “Indian Ranch” … primarily associated with country artists, but not exclusively. The parents use to go and Johnny Cash was one of the favorites to be sure.

He would come through this area from time to time and stop at Folsom prison when he did. Fortunately, I was not in that audience.
