We are barely a month shy of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Chancellorsville, one of the key clashes of the Civil War. At the Chancellorsville Visitor Center, Mary Stong-Spaid discovered her home is actually on the battlefield. Earlier this month, she offered these moving reflections and photographs of Civil War graves and monuments.

I too, have always been fascinated by the Civil War. I got part of it from my mother, who was born in Richmond, and remembered as a girl, seeing and talking to old bearded veterans, rocking the porches of VA homes hand hospitals. We lived on the east coast the first decade of my life, and an uncle toured us around the battlefields of McClellan’s peninsula campaign, which further sparked my interest in the history of the period.
Later on, when I was in college, my mother and I spent several days at Gettysburg, touring the battlefields. Two summers ago, I put up a series of posts about the battle, based on one of my favorite movies (Gettysburg) which was based in turn on one of my favorite historical novels (The Killer Angels, by Michael Sharra).
